The Wild and The Tame

"What should I do about the wild and the tame?  The wild heart that wants to be free, and the tame heart that wants to come home.  I want to be held.  I don't want you to come too close.  I want you to scoop me up and bring me home at nights.  I don't want to tell you where I am.  I want to keep a place among the rocks where no one can find me.

I want to be with you."

Right Here at Home

The fact that I am constantly thinking about travelling is nothing new.  The thing that occasionally changes, however, is where I want to go, or what sort of trip I desire to take.  Sometimes I want to embark on a grand European adventure, other times I just want to drive to a small Saskatchewan town. Lately, however, I have really wanted to explore Canadian cities.

I've travelled to a few big Canadian cities, but I certainly wouldn't say that I am well travelled.  My interest doesn't just lie in the "big" cities, though, I want to experience a little bit of everything.  I call this large, varied, beautiful country my home, but I always find myself with the desire to take off for distant places to fulfill this searching feeling in my heart.  It's only recently that I have realized I can more than satisfy this right here at home.

I want to go and do the tourist thing, and then before I leave I want to do the local thing.  Does that make sense? What I mean is, I don't want to just experience one aspect of a city, because I really have no idea when I will be back in the same place again.  Really, with my ambitions I have a lot of ground to cover and only places that are truly my favourite will get repeat visits.

There are so many ways that you can experience a place.  You can be a tourist, seeing all of the places that the city has prepared for you to see; you can travel as a local, visiting places that are a little bit off the grid, only known to people who really know the neighbourhood; you can also be a pilgrim, letting the place pass through you for its history and allowing yourself to really just be in the places you are visiting, rather than trying to make that place work for you.  I want to do it all.

Where do you want to travel to next?
